US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that it is extending the reregistration period for those Haitian nationals who have been granted Temporary Protected Status (TPS) from May 2, 2014 to July 22, 2014. Those persons wishing to reregister may have their TPS period extended for an additional 18 months. Employment authorization cards with an expiration date of July 22, 2014 are also automatically extended through January 22, 2015, while their renewal applications are pending.
TPS is a benefit granted to citizens of certain countries present inside the United States when their home country is unable to adequately provide for them due to natural disasters, ongoing armed conflict, or other extraordinary and temporary conditions. Citizens of Haiti who were present in the United States following the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti were permitted to register for TPS, allowing them temporary refuge in the United States which includes employment authorization.
