Recent Updates in Temporary Protected Status (TPS)

Temporary Protected Status, or “TPS” is a program where individuals, who are already in the United States, may receive some protections because the conditions in the designated country temporarily prevent them from returning safely.

TPS beneficiaries are provided protection against removal or deportation, are eligible to receive an employment authorization document (EAD), and in certain circumstances may be granted travel authorization.

Currently, the Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS) has designated sixteen (16) countries for TPS. These include Afghanistan, Burma (Myanmar), Cameroon, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Haiti, Honduras, Nepal, Nicaragua, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Ukraine, Venezuela, and Yemen.

Recently, DHS has announced the extension and redesignation of TPS for many of these countries.

When a county’s TPS status is extended, that means that those individuals who already have been granted TPS may continue to receive those protections and benefits. Generally, those individuals must re-register during the specified re-registration period to maintain their TPS benefits.

Redesignation of TPS allows additional eligible individuals to submit initial applications for TPS. Initial applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

• Be a national of a country designated for TPS, or a person without nationality who last habitually resided in the designated country;
• File during the open initial registration or re-registration period, or you meet the requirements for late initial filing during any extension of your country’s TPS designation;
• Have been continuously physically present (CPP) in the United States since the effective date of the most recent designation date of your country; and
• Have been continuously residing (CR) in the United States since the date specified for your country.

The status of re-registration periods and/or redesignation periods for the above-named countries are as follows:

Afghanistan
On September 21, 2023, DHS announced the extension and redesignation of Afghanistan for TPS for an additional 18 months, through May 20, 2025.

Important dates include:

• Re-Registration period (for those who already have TPS) is September 25, 2023 – November 24, 2023. Please note this period is now open!
• Registration period for initial applications for TPS is September 25, 2023 – May 20, 2025. Please note this period is now open!

Burma (Myanmar)
TPS designated for Burma (Myanmar) through May 25. 2024.

Important dates include:

• Re-Registration period (for those who already have TPS) is September 27, 2022 – November 26, 2022. Please note this period has lapsed. Please consult with an immigration attorney, to review whether a late filing exemption applies.
• Registration period for initial applications for TPS is September 27, 2022 – May 25, 2024. Please note this period is now open!

Cameroon
TPS has been extended for Cameroon through June 07, 2025.

Important dates include:

• Re-Registration period (for those who already have TPS) is October 10, 2023 – December 09, 2023. Please note this period is now open!
• Registration period for initial applications for TPS is October 10, 2023 – June 07, 2025. Please note this period is now open!

El Salvador
TPS has been extended for El Salvador through March 09, 2025.

Important dates include:

• Re-Registration period (for those who already have TPS) is July 12, 2023 – March 09, 2025. Please note this period is now open!

Ethiopia
TPS has been designated for Ethiopia through June 12, 2024.

Important dates include:

• Registration period is December 12, 2022 – June 12, 2024. Please note this period is now open!

Haiti
On December 05, 2022, DHS announced the extension and redesignation of Haiti for TPS for an additional 18 months, through August 03, 2024.

Important dates include:

• Re-Registration period (for those who already have TPS) is January 26, 2023 – August 03, 3024. Please note this period has lapsed. Please consult with an immigration attorney, to review whether a late filing exemption applies.
• Registration period for initial applications for TPS is January 26, 2023 – August 03, 2024. Please note this period has lapsed. Please consult with an immigration attorney, to review whether a late filing exemption applies.

Honduras
TPS has been extended for Honduras through July 05, 2025.

• Important dates include:
  Re-Registration period (for those who already have TPS) is November 06, 2023 – July 05, 2025. Please note this period is not yet open. Please contact an immigration attorney to review what actions are required for re-registration.

Nepal
TPS has been extended for Nepal through June 24, 2025.

Important dates include:

• Re-Registration period (for those who already have TPS) is October 24, 2023 – June 24, 2025. Please note this period is not yet open. Please contact an immigration attorney to review what actions are required for re-registration.

Nicaragua

TPS has been extended for Nicaragua through July 05, 2025.

Important dates include:

• Re-Registration period (for those who already have TPS) is November 06, 2023 – July 05, 2025. Please note this period is not yet open. Please contact an immigration attorney to review what actions are required for re-registration.

Syria
On July 29, 2022, DHS announced the extension and redesignation of Syria for TPS for an additional 18 months, through March 31, 2024.

Important dates include:

• Re-Registration period (for those who already have TPS) is August 01, 2022 – September 30, 2022. Please note this period has lapsed. Please consult with an immigration attorney, to review whether a late filing exemption applies.
• Registration period for initial applications for TPS is August 01, 2022 – March 31, 2024. Please note this period is now open!

Somalia
On January 12, 2022, DHS announced the extension and redesignation of Somalia for TPS for an additional 18 months, through September 17, 2024.

Important dates include:

• Re-Registration period (for those who already have TPS) is March 13, 2023 – May 12, 2023. Please note this period has lapsed. Please consult with an immigration attorney, to review whether a late filing exemption applies.]

Sudan
On August 18, 2023, DHS announced the extension and redesignation of Sudan for TPS for an additional 18 months, through August 19, 2025.

Important dates include:

• Re-Registration period (for those who already have TPS) is August 21, 2023 – April 19, 2025. Please note this period is now open!
• Registration period for initial applications for TPS is August 21, 2023 – April 19, 2025. Please note this period is now open!

South Sudan
On September 05, 2023, DHS announced the extension and redesignation of South Sudan for TPS through November 03, 2023.

Important dates include:

• Re-Registration period (for those who already have TPS) is September 06, 2023 – November 06, 2023. Please note this period is now open.
• Registration period for initial applications for TPS is September 06, 2023 – May 03, 2025. Please note this period is now open!

Ukraine
On August 18, 2023, DHS announced the extension and redesignation of Ukraine for TPS for 18 months, through April 19, 2025.

Important dates include:

• Re-Registration period (for those who already have TPS) is August 21, 2023 – October 20, 2023. Please note this period is now open!
• Registration period for initial applications for TPS is August 21, 2023 – April 19, 2025. Please note this period is now open!

Venezuela
On September 20, 2023, DHS announced the extension and redesignation of Venezuela for TPS. There are two designations of Venezuela for TPS, one from 2021, and the redesignation in 2023. The 2021 TPS is designated through September 10, 2025. The 2023 TPS redesignation is valid through April 02, 2025.

Yemen
TPS has been extended for Yemen through September 03, 2024.
