Department of Homeland Security Extends Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Sudan and South Sudan; Redesignates TPS for South Sudan

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Jeh Johnson has determined that the ongoing armed conflict and other extraordinary and temporary conditions in Sudan and South Sudan prevent nationals of those countries from returning to these states in safety. In light of this, the Secretary has announced the extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Sudan and South Sudan and the redesignation of TPS South Sudan.

Extension of TPS Designation for Sudan and South Sudan

Secretary Johnson has extended the TPS designation for Sudan and South Sudan for a period of 18 months, beginning November 3, 2014 and extending through May 16, 2016. Individuals previously granted TPS and who continue to meet the eligibility requirements for TPS may re-register during the 60-day period between September 2, 2014 and November 3, 2014 and receive an extension of their Employment Authorization through May 2, 2016. Additionally, the employment authorization for Sudanese and South Sudanese nationals previously granted TPS is automatically extended through May 2, 2015.

Redesignation of South Sudan for TPS

The DHS Secretary has also redesignated South Sudan for TPS. Individuals who do not currently have TPS or a pending TPS application under a prior TPS designation, who meet the basic eligibility requirements for TPS, and who have continuously resided in the United States since September 2, 2014 may submit an initial application for TPS and Employment Authorization during the initial registration period between September 2, 2014 and March 2, 2015.
