Bryon M. Large Named Lawyer of the Year

Kolko & Associates, P.C. is pleased to announce that its own Senior Associate Attorney Bryon M. Large is being named Attorney of the Year by the Colorado GLBT Bar Association. Bryon’s work over the past year is being recognized for his advocacy in the field of LGBT immigration, as well as for assuring access to immigration benefits by countless same-sex couples throughout Colorado.

In June 2013, following the landmark Windsor v. United States decision by the United States Supreme Court, the federal government began recognizing equal benefits for all people based on their marriage, regardless of the gender or sexual orientation of the couple. These benefits became crutial to immigration cases where many couples in permanent relationships had been awaiting marriage equality to file for immigration benefits, such as green cards, based on their marraige.

Given his work with AILA and other organizations, Bryon has taken full advantage of the opportunity to promote information to the LGBT community, as well as the legal community, explaining the availability of benefits based on the Supreme Court’s decision. He has taught Continuing Legal Education classes to attorneys in Colorado and across the country, teaching lawyers how to effectively and ethically handle LGBT cases. Bryon also worked closely with AILA and local government agencies to assure proper and fair implementation of the Windsor decision in all immigration benefits, available. Additionally, he spoke at various community events helping members of the LGBT community to understand what immigration benefits were now available to them and their spouses. Assuring the public had good and honest information has been a goal of his.

Bryon has been actively involved in the LGBT community throughout his career, fighting difficult asylum cases for transgender and HIV+ immigrants, as well as those who feared persecution on account of their sexual orientation. He is a recognized national expert on LGBT immigration issues.

Bryon will be honored as the Attorney of the Year by the Colorado GLBT Bar Association on September 11, 2014 at their annual dinner, to be held at the History Colorado Center.
