ALERT: F-1 Students and DSOs Should Review SEVIS Record

Review SEVIS Records for F-1 Students

On March 27, 2025, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that he had signed letters revoking more than 300 visas of students because of foreign policy views or criminal activities.

Since that date, many university officials and students, including universities in Colorado, are reporting that student statuses in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (“SEVIS”) have been terminated without notice to the student or to the University.

It is unknown how widespread this issue is, but we recommend that all Designated School Officials (DSOs) and F-1 Students review their SEVIS record regularly to confirm that students’ statuses have not been terminated.

This is especially true if the student has any type of criminal record, including traffic tickets, alcohol or drug related driving offenses, or has participated in any type of political activism on social media or general media.
